However, if you buy an eBook from our site and would like to read it on your Kindle, you do have a few options.
- First, you might want to see how to purchase an eBook from our store. Click to see how.
- If you have a "Latest Generation" Kindle, 2nd Generation Kindle, or Kindle DX, you can read the watermarked (DRM-free) PDF files sold in our store. Click to learn more.
- The watermarked PDF files sold in our store can also be converted to a native Kindle format by sending them to a special Kindle email address for conversion. Click to learn more.

Transferring PDF and Other Files to Your Kindle
The watermarked PDFs sold in our store can be read natively on the "Current Generation," 2nd Generation, and DX models of the Kindle. To transfer your PDFs to your Kindle, follow these steps:
- Connect your Kindle to your computer via a USB cable. Microsoft Windows users will see the Kindle appear as a new drive in My Computer. Mac users will see a Kindle drive on their desktop.
- Open the new Kindle drive. You'll see several folders, one of which will be named "Documents."
- Locate the PDF file downloaded from our store and copy it into the Kindle's "Documents" folder. Your new book will appear on your Kindle's Home screen.
Sending PDF Files to Amazon for Conversion
You can have Amazon convert your personal documents, including watermarked PDFs purchased from our store, into a Kindle-ready format.
Note that using Amazon's conversion services may result in a charge to your Amazon account. They currently charge for documents converted and delivered via the Whispernet 3G service, while documents transferred via Wifi are free. When using Amazon's conversion services be sure to use your @free.kindle.com email account and sync via Wifi.
- First, be sure you have set up an email address from which you can send files to your Kindle. This is done on the Manage Your Kindle page. (See the Kindle User's Guide for more information on this process.)
- From your registered email account, create a new message and attach the PDF file you wish to convert.
- Type "convert" in the subject line of the email.
- Send the email to your specific Kindle email address (for example, mykindle@free.kindle.com).
- When the conversion is complete, the book will be transferred to your Kindle the next time it is connected via Wifi and will appear on your Home screen.
- If Wifi is not available, you can visit the Manage Your Kindle page, log in, and download the file to you computer. You can then transfer the file to your Kindle by connecting it to your computer via a USB cable and copying the file to the Kindle's "Documents" folder (see the complete steps for transferring files to your Kindle in the section above, Transferring Files to Your Kindle).
Converting and Loading Files to Your Kindle Using Calibre
Calibre is a program that helps manage the library of eBooks on your computer. You can download it for Windows, OS X, or Linux from http://calibre-ebook.com/download. You can find more complete instructions on its use at http://calibre-ebook.com/user_manual/.
Converting eBooks to different formats in Calibre is fairly simple. There are more detailed settings that allow customization and personalization, but we'll stick to the basics here.
- Download and install Calibre.
- Launch Calibre.
- Click the "Add books" button and browse the directory to which you downloaded your eBook files (EPUB and/or PDF).
- Select the book you want to convert and press the "Convert books" button. Make sure the "Output format" (in the top right corner) is set to MOBI.
- Click OK to begin conversion. As your title is being converted, you'll see a spinning circle in the bottom left corner of the window.
- Once the job is complete, click on the plus sign next to "Formats" in the left navigation pane, then click on MOBI to confirm conversion. You should see your book listed in the main Library window.
- Connect your Kindle to your PC via a USB cable.
- To transfer the new MOBI file to your Kindle, click the "Send to device" button at the top of the window and select your Kindle. Or, alternately, drag your file from your library onto the "Device" button at the top. Once transferred it will appear on your Kindle's Home screen.

Purchasing eBooks from the Kindle Store
Kindle eBooks use the Mobi file format, and can be read only on the Kindle eReader and with Kindle software for your computer or other portable device. You can purchase Kindle eBooks online at Amazon.com, or via the Kindle Store accessible from your Kindle eReader.
To purchase a Kindle eBook from your computer, go to http://www.amazon.com/kindle/. You can then browse or search for specific book titles.

Purchasing an eBook from the Kindle Store website.
When you find a book you want, choose from the following delivery methods:
- Your Kindle. This option sends the eBook file directly to your Kindle, via Amazon's Whispernet wireless service.
- Your Kindle for PC/Mac. If you have the Kindle for PC or Kindle for Mac software installed on your computer, this option downloads the eBook file to your computer.
- Your Kindle for iPhone/iPad/BlackBerry. If you have the Kindle application installed on your mobile phone, this option sends the eBook file wirelessly to your device.
- Transfer via Computer. Use this option when you don't have a wireless connection to your Kindle; it downloads the eBook file to your computer, instead.
Once you've selected a delivery method, click the "Buy Now with 1-Click" button to complete the purchase.
If you selected the Transfer via Computer option, you then have to transfer the eBook to your Kindle. Begin by connecting your Kindle to your computer via the supplied USB cable. When you do so, a new drive for your Kindle should show up in the My Computer window. (Mac users will see the Kindle drive on their desktop.) Copy the eBook file from its home on your computer to the Kindle device window. The eBook should now appear in the list of titles on the Kindle Home screen.
Purchasing eBooks from Your Kindle
You can also purchase books directly from your Kindle eReader device. On your Kindle, press the Menu button and select Shop in Kindle Store.
When the Kindle Store appears onscreen, browse or search for the book you want. To purchase a book, highlight and click the Buy button onscreen. The book will automatically be downloaded to your Kindle.
Note that to purchase books from your Kindle, it must be connected to a wireless Internet connection. Some Kindles use a built-in WiFi antenna to access the Internet via wireless internet hotspots and private wireless networks. Other Kindles use Amazon's Whispernet service, which is accessed wirelessly via Sprint's cellular network in the U.S. Both services access the Kindle Store and deliver eBooks directly to your Kindle.
Reading an eBook on Your Kindle
When you press the Home button on your Kindle, you see a list of all the books you've purchased or downloaded to your device. Select a book to begin reading.
All of the Kindle's navigation controls are on the device itself. To turn to the next page, press the Next Page button. To return to the previous page, press the Prev Page button.
To jump to a specific section in the book, press the Menu button and select Table of Contents. This displays the Table of Contents page; select a chapter or section title to jump to that section of the book.
To search for a specific word or phrase, press the Menu button and select Search This Book. Use the keypad to enter the term you're looking for into the Search box, then select Find. All instances of the search term are now listed; select an instance to jump to that point in the book.
To change the size of the onscreen text, tap the Text (AA) button on the keypad to display the Text panel. Select a font from the top row of the panel.
Can I Share My eBook Files?
When you purchase an eBook, that copy is designed for your own personal use. While you can copy an eBook file for use on another device you own, such as a portable eReader or smartphone, you cannot share copies with other people. You also cannot sell used eBooks; ownership is yours only, and cannot be transferred.
To protect against unauthorized copying, some of the eBooks we sell as PDFs include digital rights management (DRM) technology. This technology limits the use of the purchased eBook(s) to a maximum of six devices. Adobe Digital Editions is required to view these DRM-protected files.
Other eBooks are sold without DRM and can easily be copied to up to six devices. You cannot share these eBooks with other people, however. Our non-DRM eBooks are embedded with personalized watermarks that help us identify any unauthorized copies found online. For more information on watermarking, see our Watermarked eBook FAQ.
