Content Aware Fill

Content-Aware Fill

At SIGGRAPH 2007, Shair Avidan and Ariel Shamir presented a paper on a new technique for resizing of images called “Seam Carving for Content-Aware Image Resizing,” and in a matter of days, the video was everywhere. It was not too long afterwards that John Nack announced that Shai Avidan had joined Adobe, and swirls started to form about whether Seam Carving would find itself in Photoshop. CS4 immediately brought us “Content-Aware Scale” technology, but noticeably absent was the ability to fill in an area based on this same technology.

Enter Photoshop CS5. In this new release you have the ability to leverage Content-Aware Fill technologies in the Spot Healing Brush and the Fill Tool. To use it in the fill tool, draw a lasso selection around the item that you want to get rid of.

Once you have the item selected, click on Edit>Fill and you’ll get a dialog box that you can select “Content Aware” From. In no time flat you will be able to remove even the most complex items. Keep in mind, however, that this is not a magic bullet when you are working with photos in Photoshop. The best way to look at it is that this tool will sometimes amaze you completely. Other times, it will give you a really good head start on something that would have taken you a lot longer to do using the Clone tool.
